Recovery Room

Postoperative care is the management of a patient after surgery. Since both surgery and anesthesia have unavoidable temporary ill effects on normal physiological functions, every effort must be made to prevent postoperative complications. From the time the patient is admitted to the recovery room, to the time recovery from the operation is complete; there are definite goals of care that guide the entire postoperative course. These goals are as follows:

  • Promoting respiratory function
  • Promoting cardiovascular function
  • Promoting renal function
  • Promoting nutrition and elimination
  • Promoting fluid and electrolyte balance
  • Promoting wound healing
  • Encouraging rest and comfort
  • Encouraging movement and ambulation
  • Preventing postoperative complications

Postoperative care involves assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and outcome evaluation. The extent of postoperative care required depends on the individual's pre-surgical health status and type of surgery. In that the types of surgical procedures that AMC can perform are limited to those in which the patient will remain no more than 23 hours, almost all patients will usually require only a few hours of care by AMC health care professionals before they are discharged to go home.
The AMC postoperative unit will be staffed by nurses and doctors specially trained and experienced for postoperative recovery procedures. The unit will contain seven fully equipped hospital beds.
